Profile

Professor Rulun Zhang was born in Shanghai in May 1953. He received his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Philosophy from Fudan University in 1984 and 1987. After graduation, he was elected to the position of assistant professor at Fudan. He became an associate professor in 1993, a full professor in 1995, and then a State Council Special Allowance Expert in 2004. Professor Zhang has won many distinguished teaching awards, and is widely recognized as one of the most inspirational teachers of the university. Since 1987, he has also been a visiting scholar/professor at various universities around the world, such as the University of Tübingen, the University of Freiburg, the University of Trier, the Pennsylvania State University, the University of Ottawa, Fu Jen Catholic University, Heilongjiang University, and Peking University. He became the dean of ShanghaiTech’s Institute of Humanities in 2020.

Chinese and Western philosophy; history of Chinese and Western thought; comparative philosophy; political philosophy; German philosophy; moral philosophy; pre-Qin philosophy; Confucianism; and modern Chinese philosophy.
