Language usage is said to vary depending on the situation (filed), human relationship (tenor) and media (mode), and there are a log of linguistic variation depending on the purpose to be achieved by speech act, even in one language (Swales,1990). Japanese language also has the variety of language use, following different human relationship and socially expected behavior, and most famous example of this variation is honorific; how to speak politely with the adequate expression in each occasion. It may seems only to add some extra burden for 2nd language learners, but acquiring it would increase the sophistication on smooth human relationship and esteeming their conversational partner in Japanese language. This course takes issues of Japanese honorific as for its grammar and logical frames, to learn the language expression used in the working place or laboratory communication. As well, the upper elementary grammar, which is necessary in daily communication, are to be introduced. In addition to acquiring basic knowledge of honorific expressions, practical exercises to use the learned grammar will be provided, by giving activities, such as role-playing and drills. Thus, this course aims to provide sufficient background for students’ different speech styles to live and work in the possible Japanese environment in their future, in both of working place and daily talk with colleagues.
