This course examines the United States from 1955-1975 to raise questions about the significance of the 

Vietnam War, the War against Poverty, Civil Rights, the New Right, and the counterculture for American 

society and values. A critical understanding of these two decades in the mid-twentieth century, more 

than any other era of American history, helps us better understand the social, political, and economic 

movements and debates that drive the United States today.
