课程简介

“We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aids, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn.” The 19th-century American writer Henry David Thoreau’s masterpiece Walden is a book about how to wake up to the world, how to learn from nature, and how to live a life that is authentically your own. It is also a central text in American literary history, a profound meditation on freedom and American identity, a dense philosophical treatise, and much else besides. In our present age of climate catastrophe and environmental degradation, its lessons are more urgent than ever. In this summer course, we will undertake an intensive reading of Walden and consider how his experiment in intentional living might help us intensify our own lives.
