Learn how goddesses played a foundational role in the mythic thought and literature of the ancient Near East, Egypt, Greece, and India, where they loomed large as powerful, archetypal figures, central to world renewal, knowledge, creativity, the power of nature, and the deepest workings of the universe.  We will study selections from ancient epic, myth, and folklore.  We will further trace connections between the written word and the visual and material culture of the ancient and pre-modern worlds by studying objects, paintings, temples and sculptures depicting and/or dedicated to the goddess.  Students will gain a better understanding of ancient world views, particularly the commonalities and differences in the importance assigned to the divine feminine force across cultures.
