Current developments in AI promise to drastically alter how we think about “intelligence.” The next logical step would be to ask whether natural or artificially designed machines could also mimic (human) consciousness or even *are* conscious. We, therefore, need to understand what consciousness is and whether it could be formalized in a way that speaks to our current science and technology. For example, consciousness could be understood in terms of biological, computational, or even fundamental properties of the universe. Modern positions that aim at tackling or dissolving the problem of consciousness should be discussed, with specific emphasis on computational approaches.
