This course offers an in-depth exploration of Shakespeare’s King Lear, widely acknowledged as one of the towering achievements of English dramatic literature. Through close reading, critical discussion, and engagement with scholarship, students will consider how King Lear interrogates themes such as nature, family, and human and divine justice. Attention will also be given to the play’s adaptations, and snippets of modern dramatic adaptations will accompany discussion of the text.
