What do coffee beans, torpedoes, surgical scalpels, architectural arches, and astronomical observatories all have in common? They are part of the heritage of the cosmopolitan medieval Muslim world, where a creative golden age of Arabic letters, the arts and sciences, discovery, and scholarship flourished. The course will enable students to travel to 8th century Baghdad, where great advancements were made at the House of Knowledge by polymath scholars who worked across academic disciplines. Students will learn how this emergent knowledge was fostered and then spread to other urban centers at a time when Arabic was used as a common language across a geographic swath ranging from Spain to the Near East and South Asia. Selected primary texts will include English translations of Perso-Arabic stories, philosophical and mathematical treatises, poetry, speeches, recipes, letters, and songs; selections from secondary source material will empower students to make effective use of sources to establish strong historical context and close reading skills.
