Russian culture is often represented by clichés: matryoshka dolls, golden domes of churches, and facades of pre-1917 buildings in St. Petersburg. We will move away from this “tourist” idea of Russia and explore cultural phenomena that represent Russian culture today. We will learn about modern Russian architecture and its relationship to modern Western architecture. We will discuss modern Russian cinema and use some of these movies to explore modern Russia and the image of the self that it is seeking to project. We will discover how “traditional Russian cuisine” is recreated today and why the “Soviet style” is becoming popular in modern Russian culture. The course includes screening and discussing movies and musical videos, as well as reading articles and book excerpts.
