课程简介
This course thematizes a key juncture in German intellectual history: the folk, myth, and fairytale. In the first term our discussion will be limited to the Goethezeit. In the first half of this term, we reconstruct the Grimm brothers’ effort to catalogue folk stories, the basis of their pedagogical motive, and its role in the formation of national identity. Special attention will be paid to the divergence between early and late editions of their magnum opus. We familiarize ourselves with philological, structuralist, psychoanalytic, and Marxian interpretations. In the second half of term, w proceed to the “Kunstmärchen” i.e. the literary adoption of the fairytale. This invites questions about the oral form of the folk & fairy tale and its relationship to the written form, which is an effective prism through which to introduce the literary Romantics. At the end of the Enlightenment, authors like Ludwig Tieck and E. T. A. Hoffmann interpreted folk, myth, and fairytale as an antidote for rationality that had dissolved belief and collective identity.
