课程简介
This course offers an introduction to the recent history of the United States by examining key movements and turning points from its emergence as a global power at the end of the nineteenth century. The course begins by examining the rise of American populism and imperial ambitions at the turn of the twentieth century. We then explore the growing influence of movements for workers’ and women’s rights in the 1910s, followed by: World War I; the Great Depression; the New Deal; the Cold War; the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War and cultural revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. This course will end with the rise of conservatism from the 1970s-1990s, which has been responsible for both shaping our “historical memory” of the twentieth century, as well as establishing the specific divisions on economic, cultural, and international politics that we see in the United States today.
