This course will offer an overview of the Age of Enlightenment, sometimes also called the “Age of Reason” – a Western European intellectual movement that came to prominence in the 18th century and gave birth to ideas that still shape our lives and provoke heated arguments today. The course will offer an introduction to some of the most influential figures of the Enlightenment, their key texts ideas, and the social context in which these ideas circulated. We will also reflect on the relevance of these ideas in today’s world and the criticism that the Enlightenment has faced in recent decades.
