This course offers an overview of the history of American cinema and an introduction to the techniques of film criticism and analysis. We will examine masterpieces from directors like Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, and Stanley Kubrick; learn about the development of the Hollywood studio system and its relationship to the broader cultural history of the United States; and examine the works of major philosophers and film theorists including Henri Bergson, Gilles Deleuze, Stanley Cavell, and Laura Mulvey.
