This course offers an introduction to the history of Russian Empire and covers the period from the rise of the first Rus’ state to the 1917 Revolution. It seeks to to familiarize students with the key events in the history of pre-revolutionary Russia and invites them to reflect on the ways in which the empire functioned as a political, social, and cultural entity.  Special attention is paid to the empire’s composite character and to the ways in which different groups experienced the empire. The course also invites students to draw parallels and make comparisons with other empires of that age and to explore the challenges that empires faced in the age of nations and nationalism.
