The language cannot be fully understood, until the language is considered with its context, culture, and background. However, the concept of “Culture” is sometimes ambiguous, different from simple definition as tradition, arts, custom, nor something to be separated by geographical condition or language spoken inside.
This course aims to acquire the meaningful correlation between your own perspectives and definition about “Culture” in Japan, which currently exists in your mind, and aim to continuously revising this existing knowledge to new one, though introducing various ranges of topics, such as current sociological, philosophical, and linguistic issues in Japan, as well as the traditional culture and counterculture.
This course also encourages participants’ self-reliant opportunity to discuss issues and compare acquired perspective to the existing knowledge, assumptions and subjectivities in the individual mind.
Through this process of revising and developing perspectives, students would inquire to which part of theories personally are attracted, and how these features of culture are comparable to other cultural counterparts. Consequently, each student would reach to creating their own cultural portfolio in Japanese Culture and Society until the end of this course, by corelating those to the individual background and curiosity.
