This seminar will explore the development of psychoanalytic theory as a therapeutic practice and as a method for understanding social and cultural forms. Over the course of four weeks, we will attend closely to foundational texts by Sigmund Freud, alongside some of his followers, tracing the emergence of concepts like wish-fulfillment, cathexis, repression, sublimation, and the death drive. Each class meeting will be split into two parts: in the first, we will discuss the concepts and methods that are outlined in the assigned readings; in the second, we will examine cultural objects (poems, paintings, films, etc.) and ask how the psychoanalytic ideas we’ve learned can help us to understand them. Finally, we will consider how psychoanalytic thinking can enable us to bridge the gap between individual psychology and social theory.
