课程简介
This course examines the histories of China, Japan, and Korea from 1800 to the present. The central theme is how East Asian empires and/or nation-states, through long-lasting political, socio-economic, and cultural interactions and conflicts with each other and the rest of the World, actively constructed and reconstructed distinctive identities in the context of imperialism, capitalism, communism, warfare, revolutionary resistance, and post-colonial economic growth with unique Asian trajectories and characteristics. We will discuss a wide range of historical and literary genres (in translation) as the primary source of analysis throughout the semester to help you gain deeper understanding of fluid national identities, contested historical memories, and (mis-)perceptions of each other and westerners.
