This course uses a selection of films as basic texts through which students will talk about presentational and representational modes of traditional Asian performing arts in films.
Whilewewillpaydueattentiontotheaestheticaspectsof the performing arts per se—the artistic forms and their basic techniques, class discussions will not be limited to a single theme. Emphasis will also be placed on the cultural identity of traditional theater constructed by the film. We will place each film in the historical context of the confrontation between traditionalism and anti-traditionalism,betweenanti-colonialnationalismandmodernization. ThisisthedilemmathattraditionaltheaterfromEastAsianregionsasawholewasfacingin the past century despite the specificity of each cultural sphere.
