Abstract
Drawing on the experiences and practices of teaching “Literature and Writing” courses at ShanghaiTech University, this paper explores effective ways of integrating academic writing and literary reading in college literature classes to motivate students to write to learn. The authors first present the results of a survey recently conducted atShanghaiTech to understand and analyze the reading and writing habits of college students in STEM majors, as well as their interests in literature courses and one-on-one writing conferences. Second, the authors apply these results to discuss some common writing challenges college students face, and then propose possible solutions for teachers to help students develop appropriate academic writing and critical thinking skills through course design and writing support.
