Introduction of the Speaker: Morris Rossabi is a Distinguished Professor of History at the City University of New York and at Columbia University. Author or editor of 28 books, including Khubilai Khan, Modern Mongolia, Voyager from Xanadu, From Yuan to Modern China and Mongolia, and A History of China, as well as over a 100 book chapters, including for several volumes of the Cambridge History of China, and articles. He has collaborated on catalogs for art exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Talk Description: In the middle of the fourteenth century, the Ilkhanate in West Asia and the Yuan dynasty in East Asia, both of which were established by the Mongols, collapsed. This is an event of world-wide significance. This talk explores reasons for the collapse and its impact on the Eurasian continent. From the perspective of global history, this talk compares the different trajectories of Chinese and West Asian history, seeking to illuminate the intricate relationships between the different civilizations in the fourteenth century.
