At noon on November 3, the English language and literature activity of the third Humanities Festival of ShanghaiTech University - Meet the classics: The English translation of The Three Body Problem- was successfully held in the second floor of the Institute of Humanities E200.
The Three-Body Problem is a novel serialized by Chinese writer Liu Cixin in Science Fiction World magazine from May to December 2006. Soon after its publication, the book became one of the best-selling science fiction novels of all time in China. In 2014, an English version of the novel was published by Tor Books in the United States, and was was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. A year later, it won the Hugo Award for Best Novel.
In 2020, Netflix announced that it would produce an English-language web series for The Three-Body Problem. The series will be released in January 2024.
This activity attracted the active participation of many students and teachers. There was a lively discussion. Zainab Mahmood and Wu Jingyue from the Foreign Language Department of the Institute of Humanities, shared with the teachers and students the interesting aspects of The Three-Body Problem through a combination of watching and discussing. This helps them to have a deeper understanding of how The Three-Body Problem, a science fiction classic, went abroad and entered the English-speaking world.
