Title:On the Creative Impulse.
Abstract:
The lecture addresses the interdisciplinary approach between different fields and the integrated relationship between art and science.
The lecture will start with the multidisciplinary nature of indigenous ritual (shaman as the first artist). It will also explain Pythagoras as a cultural phenomenon in which science, philosophy, and art are integrated (rationalism and empiricism). By using the example design of the Greek Parthenon, the lecture will also show how engineering design can be integrated with human visual “illusion” (optical refinement / reverse optical illusion).
The lecture will introduce a few artists who utilize interdisciplinary approaches to create unique forms and styles. I will then introduce my own practice and analyze the possibility of breaking the boundary of my specialty.
Speaker:
As an artist, Zhao has utilized painting, sculpture, installation, earth art, sound, and interdisciplinary media for his creativity. Zhao has also worked in public art since 1998. He has done many permanent public art projects with US federal, state, and city agencies. He received many awards, including The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Fellowship New York Foundation for the Art and Media Production Award, and Individual Artist / New York State Council on the Arts just to name a few.
Zhao has taught at the Fine Arts Department of the Fashion Institute of Technology, SUNY, since 1996, and currently he serves as the Chair of the Fine Art Department. Zhao also has been a visiting scholar at the Graduate School of Philosophy, Fudan University since 2016. Zhao writes extensively on art and has published many articles in various magazines. The books Zhao has published are: the Pencil End 《铅笔头》from Eastern China Normal University Press in 2012, Space of Keyboard 《键盘空间》from Beijing Normal University Press in 2016, Picking Fragmentation 《拾碎》 from Eastern China Normal University Press and Picking Grain 《拾穗》from Shanghai Sanlian Bookstore Co., Ltd. in 2023. A book on multi-media The Body Between Space and Time -- The intrinsic element of the creative form《时空交界的身体——艺术形式的内在基因》will be Shanghai Sanlian Bookstore Co., Ltd. in 2024.
