Dear all,
The lecture titled All Things Are Within Me, But Which Self Is Real? — A Brief Journey into the Philosophy of Mathematics will be hosted at 15:00 on Monday, April 21th, in Room 403, Teaching Center of University. Welcome!
Speaker: Yang Ruizhi is an Associate Professor at the School of Philosophy, Fudan University. His research interests include mathematical logic, philosophy of mathematics, and the foundations of mathematics — particularly set theory and its philosophy, computability and randomness, as well as the history of mathematical logic and analytic philosophy.
Abstract: This talk embarks on a journey through the philosophy of mathematics, beginning with the assertion that any strictly formulated content can be expressed in mathematics. Mathematics is often seen as a model of rigor, reliability, and applicability for other disciplines. However, deeper reflection reveals that mathematics may face even more serious philosophical challenges than other fields. We will revisit some of the historical philosophical problems that mathematics has encountered and explore how foundational research has successfully addressed many of these issues. The talk will also touch on unresolved contemporary questions in the philosophy of mathematics, such as the search for new axioms and the idea of a mathematical multiverse, along with recent developments in mathematics — such as the growing role of automated proof assistants — that are generating new philosophical discussions.
Inviter: Wang Qiang, assistant teaching professor of Philosophy and Logic, Institute of Humanities.
