Dear all,
An academic dialogue bridging the humanities and sciences – “Interdisciplinary Dialogue on Energy Transition (and the 20th Université d’Automne sino-française de Shanghai – ShanghaiTech University Session)” – will be held on Saturday, September 27, from 8:30 to 17:30, in Room 302 of the Library. We warmly invite all faculty and students to attend.

【About the “Université d’Automne sino-française de Shanghai” 】
Co-organized by the Chinese Society of French Historical Studies and the French Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme, among other institutions, the “Université d’Automne sino-française de Shanghai” (Sino-French Autum University of Shanghai) has become one of the highest-level academic exchange platforms in humanities and social sciences between China and France since its inception in 2004. This year marks its 20th edition. For the first time, the seminar is being hosted outside a traditional liberal arts university, choosing ShanghaiTech for a dedicated session, a testament to our university’s unique interdisciplinary DNA and innovative environment. This offers our campus community a rare opportunity to engage in a world-class dialogue between the humanities and sciences without even leaving campus.
【Event Theme】
This session, themed “Interdisciplinary Dialogue on Energy Transition,” aims to break down disciplinary barriers by bringing together diverse perspectives from history, physics, environmental science, agronomy, and philosophy of science & technology to discuss this critical global issue. The event will look beyond mere technical solutions, delving into historical contexts and governance logic to provide fresh insights into the complexities of the energy transition.
【Speakers】
We are honored to host leading scholars, including:
Historical Perspective: Professor Mathieu Arnoux from École des hautes études en sciences sociales (School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences) will analyze the resource systems of “renewable societies” before the Industrial Revolution.
Physics & Systems Science Perspective: Professor José Halloy from Université Paris Cité will examine the challenges of the Anthropocene from an Earth system science viewpoint. (9:0-9:50 in Room 302 of the Library)
Agriculture-Energy Systems Perspective: Professor Pétros Chatzimpiros from Université Paris Cité will quantitatively analyze the deep interlinkages between energy transition and global food security.
Materials Science Perspective: Our own Professor Zhang Yuebiao (School of Physical Science and Technology, Institute of Carbon Neutrality) will share the latest material breakthroughs in Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology.
The event will also feature a roundtable discussion(In Room 501 of the Library), where scholars will engage in an in-depth debate on “Energy Transition Pathways and Risks under Uncertainty.”
Regardless of your academic background, this is a remarkable opportunity to stimulate interdisciplinary innovative thinking and interact with the speakers and delve deeper into topics that interest you.
We look forward to embarking on this intellectual journey with you in Library Room 302! Please note that the lectures by French professors will be delivered in French, with simultaneous interpretation into Chinese provided by Professor Wei Aoyu from Université Sorbonne Nouvelle.
