Dear all,
The lecture titled Certainty and Knowledge – A Guided Reading of Wittgenstein’s On Certainty will be hosted at 18:00 on Friday, October 31th, in Room 302, Library of ShanghaiTech. Welcome!
Speaker: Prof. LOU Wei, Vice Dean of School of Philosophy, Zhejiang University, Chinese translator of On Certainty.
Abstract: In On Certainty, Wittgenstein argues that our deepest certainties are not pieces of knowledge based on evidence or inference; they function as the “scaffolding” that makes every language-game possible. Shaking that scaffolding would deprive ordinary language of its sense. The talk will walk through key passages of the book and explain why “I know” sometimes makes no sense at all.
Moderator: ZENG Yuming, Assistant Professor, Researcher, Institute of Humanities
