Dear all,

The lecture titled  A 25-Year Odyssey at UNESCO  will be hosted at 18:30 on Friday, November 7th, in Room 302, Library of ShanghaiTech. Welcome!

Speaker: Our distinguished speaker holds a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Louvain (UCLouvain) in Belgium and formerly served as the Director of the Division of Public Information (D2 level) at UNESCO. His distinguished career, which has spanned Belgium, Uganda, France, Brazil, Switzerland, and Spain, is marked by over 25 years of dedication to advancing international cooperation and intercultural dialogue at UNESCO. As a seasoned communication expert, he has spearheaded and managed a wide range of large-scale, complex programs. He is fluent in French, English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Abstract: This is a story about “doing something for peace in the world.”For 25 golden years of his career, our speaker, Dr. Vincent Defourny, dedicated himself to UNESCO. How does this vast international machinery truly operate from the inside? Beyond the grand themes of “education, science, and culture,” what are the specific battles won and lost? And when a mission built on idealism collides with the intricate realities of international politics, what sparks – and smoke – will fly? Now retired, he can speak with candor. Shedding official narratives and speaking as a direct witness, he will share insights into UNESCO’s mission, its impact, and the real challenges it faces in a fractured world. This is more than a lesson on international organizations; it is a vivid “personal history” of global governance.

Moderator: Liu Yuxi, Assistant Professor , Institute of Humanities
