Abstract
This lecture returns to the debates in Germany during the 1790s about the processes of social change. Schiller's On the Aesthetic Education of Man addressed key problems of the age: the increasingly alienated work routines necessitated by the division of labour, and the related question of how individuals damaged by these work routines could constructively contribute to social betterment and avoid the violent turmoil that soshocked Schiller as he followed political developments in France.
