Dear all,
The lecture titled Hamlet or Hecuba: a legend about Carl Schmitt's role during World War II will be hosted at 18:00 on Thursday, April 16th, in Room 209, SEM Building. Welcome!
Abstract:This lecture will focus on the German jurist Carl Schmitt's 1956 book Hamlet or Hercuba, and explore how Schmitt made an obscure and allegory self-interpretation of his political role in the Nazi era through the interpretation of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Professor Mehring will lead you to explore how Schmitt projects political experience and historical reality into literary texts. By analyzing Schmitt's use of concepts such as invasion of the times, play in play and mythology, the lecture will analyze how literature has become Schmidt's strategy for secret writing and its political theological background. This 1956 book is not only a historical defense, but also a theoretical reflection on the relationship between literature, politics and mythology. At the same time, it also inspires today's readers to think about how literature has become an important expression of political thought and historical memory.
Speaker:Reinhard Mehring is a German political scientist and philosopher who has written extensively on Carl Schmitt. He is the author of several monographs on Thomas Mann, Carl Schmitt, Heidegger and others, including the most authoritative and detailed biography of Schmitt Carl Schmitt. Aufstieg und Fall. Eine Biographie. In 2025, he published Jenseits von Freund und Feind. Carl Schmitt im Kontext von Antipoden.
