Dear all,

The Lecture titledAn Introduction to Reasoning about Knowledge and Belief in Logic Puzzles will be held at 15:00 on Monday, November 9, Room 303,Building 1, SPST. Please find below the abstract and a brief introduction to the speaker.

Abstract: We will explore reasoning about knowledge and belief through classic logic puzzles, including the birthday puzzle, the muddy children puzzle, the surprise examination paradox, the lottery paradox, and urn problems. Why can publicly announcing something that everyone already knows lead to new knowledge? Can private whispers take the place of public announcements? Does having more information always help us make better choices? By introducing concepts such as epistemic models, doxastic models, model updates, public announcements, and common knowledge, we will show how logicians formalize and address these intriguing questions.

Speaker:Haoyu Wang is a postdoctoral researcher and assistant research fellow at the Institute of Modern Logic and Application, Nanjing University. He graduated from the Department of Philosophy at Peking University and was a visiting doctoral student at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC), University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, under a joint doctoral training program. His main research areas are modal logic and non-classical logic. His work has appeared in Annals of Pure and Applied Logic and Advances in Modal Logic.

Inviter: Wang Qiang, Teaching Assistant Professor, Institute of Humanities, ShanghaiTech University.
